The name “ʿArafah” (عَرَفَة) comes from the Arabic root ʿa-ra-fa (عَرَفَ), which means to know, to recognise, or to understand. There are several famous opinions regarding the origin of this name:

It is said that after being sent down to Earth, Prophet Ādam (as) and Ḥawwāʾ (as) were separated and later recognised each other at this place, and so it was named ʿArafah. (Fākihī, Akhbār Makka, vol. 5, p. 9.)

Another view is that it is the place where pilgrims would “recognise” their sins, ask for forgiveness, and reflect on their relationship with Allah. (Sakhāwī, al-Buldānīyāt, p. 225)

According to a narration, when Angel Gabriel (as) was teaching Prophet Ibrahim (as) the rites of Hajj, after explaining each step, he would ask: “Have you recognised and understood [what to do]?” and Ibrāhīm (as) would reply, “ʿAraftu” (I have recognised/understood). Hence the area was called ʿArafah – the place of knowledge and understanding. (Azraqī, Akhbār Makka, vol. 1, p. 67)

The Day of ʿArafah — the 9th of Dhul-Ḥijjah — is one of the most sacred days in the Islamic calendar. It is the day when the pilgrims stand on the plain of ʿArafāt, just outside Mecca, in total humility before Allah. However, this day is not just for the pilgrims. It is a day of deep spiritual opportunity for all believers, wherever they are in the world.

In the traditions the Day of ʿArafah is described as a special day where, sins are forgiven and duas are answered. It is a day of self-reflection, repentance, and returning to Allah with sincerity.

ʿArafah is not just about standing in a place — it’s about ‘recognising’ who we truly are: weak, dependent, sinful servants — and recognising who our Lord is: Merciful, Generous, All-Forgiving.

To make the most of this day, there are a few recommended acts to do:

Ghusl (Ritual Purification) – Performing Ghusl before noon on the Day of ʿArafah is recommended.

Fasting – It is recommended to observe fasting on ʿArafah Day, unless fasting prevents from recitation of supplications.

Recite Dua ʿArafah of Imam Husayn on this day which is found in dua books such as Mafātīḥ al-Jinān

Performing Ziyārah (visitation) to the shrine of Imam al-Husayn (as) on the Day of ʿArafah is highly recommended.

It is recommended to perform two units (rakʿahs) of prayer outdoors after ʿAṣr prayer. In the first rakʿah, recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and Sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ; in the second, recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and Sūrah al-Kāfirūn.

Recite Dua 47 from Ṣahifah al-Sajjadiyyah. This supplication, attributed to Imam Ali Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn (as), is specifically for the Day of ʿArafah.

The Day of ʿArafah is a prime opportunity for seeking Allah’s forgiveness through sincere repentance. Engaging in abundant Istighfār is highly encouraged.

Recite Ṣalawāt on Prophet (S) and Ahlul Bayt (as) as much as possible

Giving Charity (Ṣadaqah)

Engaging in these practices with sincerity can lead to immense rewards and closeness to Allah.

Sources:

Fiqh al-Muhadithyn

Mafatih al Jinan

Many people—especially the youth—find themselves trapped in harmful habits, such as constantly watching immoral or explicit content. What may begin as curiosity can quickly turn into an addiction. But what causes this? And how can we break free?

The answer starts with understanding a powerful chemical in the brain: dopamine.

🔬 What is Dopamine?

Dopamine is a chemical in your brain, often called the “feel-good” hormone or “reward chemical.” It’s released whenever you do something that feels rewarding—like eating tasty food, getting likes on social media, or watching exciting content. This makes you feel good, and your brain says, “That felt good—let’s do it again!”

This is how habits and even addictions form. But there’s a catch: the brain starts to chase what gives it the highest dopamine spike, even if it’s harmful. Watching immoral content gives a massive surge of dopamine, tricking the brain into thinking it’s something good. Over time, the brain builds tolerance and needs more of it to feel the same pleasure, leading to compulsive, addictive behaviour.

How Does Dopamine Affects Our Lives:

Over time, the brain becomes accustomed to the high dopamine levels and craves more. This means:

Normal things (like prayer, real relationships, halal entertainment) feel boring or less rewarding.

The person also keeps returning to immoral content for that same “rush.”

Eventually, it numbs emotions, damages motivation, and causes shame, emptiness, or spiritual distance. It can even lead to depression or anxiety.

Can the Brain Heal?

Yes. The brain has incredible plasticity, which means it can heal and reset itself. By stopping unhealthy habits and focusing on natural, halal rewards—like prayer, sincere dua, exercise, family bonding, and Quran recitation—the dopamine system can gradually return to its natural state.

5 Practical Steps to Break Free:

Tawbah (repentance) – Repentance is more than just saying “Astaghfirullāh.” It’s a sincere return to Allah, with genuine regret for the sin and the intention never to repeat it. Make it a habit to do daily istighfār, even when you’re not in a sinful moment. Remember, Allah’s mercy is always greater than your sins.

Block the triggers – Don’t leave the door open to temptation. Use filters, uninstall apps, or remove access to harmful content. Take control of your environment, as technology can either serve your soul or destroy it.

Stay busy – Fill your day with purposeful activities: study, exercise, worship, and halal hobbies. Build a structured routine where you always know, “What’s next?” The busier your life is with goodness, the less room sin has to grow.

Fast regularly – The Prophet (s) recommended fasting for those struggling with desires. Fasting disciplines the soul, strengthens willpower, and increases taqwā. Use fasting days to cut down on screen time, increase Qurān recitation, and reflect. Fasting makes you spiritually alert and less likely to give in to temptation.

Make dua – When everything else feels weak, dua is always powerful. Never underestimate the strength of turning to Allah with tears and sincerity. Say often: “O Allah, purify my heart and protect my gaze.”

Remember: Addiction is not a sign of weakness; it’s a call to return to strength through Allah. No matter how many times you fall, never give up.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who often return (to Him) and loves those who purify (themselves).” (Sūrah al-Baqarah 2:222)

Imām al-ʿAskarī (as)

Imām Ḥasan b. ʿAlī (as) is the eleventh divinely appointed successor of the Prophet (s). His most well-known title is az-Zakī (The Pure One), but he is also known as al-ʿAskarī. This is because he lived in the city of Sāmarrāʾ, which was a military town, and the Arabic word ʿAskar means military camp.

With His Father

Imām al-ʿAskarī (as) spent part of his life with his father, Imām ʿAlī al-Hādī (as), and would even travel with him. When they moved to Sāmarrāʾ, despite the tight restrictions, people began to recognise the knowledge, manners, and spiritual strength of Imām al-ʿAskarī (as).

His Patience

Imām al-ʿAskarī (as) was known for his incredible patience. He would always control his anger and respond to those who wronged him with kindness and forgiveness.

The Story of al-Kindī

In his time, there was a philosopher called al-Kindī who was very respected and considered the greatest thinker of the era. Al-Kindī started writing a book trying to find ‘mistakes’ in the Qurān.

One of his students visited Sāmarrāʾ and met Imām al-ʿAskarī (as), who asked the student:
“Is there no one among you who can show your teacher his mistake?”
The student replied, “I’m not able to debate him.”

So the Imām gave the student a few questions to ask al-Kindī. He also told him to say,
“Is it not possible that your understanding of the verse is not what the author (Allah) intended?”

When the student asked these questions, al-Kindī was shocked and amazed.
“Where did you get these from?” he asked.

At first, the student said they were his own, but al-Kindī didn’t believe him. When the student finally admitted they came from Imām al-ʿAskarī (as), al-Kindī replied:
“Only someone from that noble household could come up with such questions.”

And with that, al-Kindī burnt his book, realising he had no true argument against the Qurān.

The Birth of the Awaited Imām

The ʿAbbāsid rulers were extremely harsh towards Imām al-ʿAskarī (as), especially because they had heard that his son would be the promised Mahdī (atfs). Because of this, Imām al-ʿAskarī (as) had to protect his son while still informing his close and trusted followers of his birth.

Imām al-Mahdī (as) was born on the 15th of Shaʿbān, but the news of his birth was kept secret. Only a few reliable followers knew. Imām al-ʿAskarī (as) also prepared the Shīʿa for the coming Ghaybah (occultation) by writing letters and teaching them to hold on to patience and faith.

In one letter to ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn al-Qummī (the father of Shaykh al-Ṣadūq), he wrote:

“Be patient. Our Shīʿa will continue to suffer until the appearance of my son, whose coming was promised by the Messenger of Allah (s). He will fill the earth with justice after it has been filled with oppression.”

Like Prophet Mūsā (as), Allah hid the birth of Imām al-Mahdī (as) from the enemies to protect him.

His Martyrdom and the Minor Ghaybah

Eventually, the ruler at the time increased his spying on the house of the Imām. Fearing that the Imām (as) would overthrow him, he decided to poison him.

Imām al-ʿAskarī (as) was buried beside his father Imām ʿAlī al-Hādī (as) in Sāmarrāʾ.

At the funeral, a man named Jaʿfar al-Kadhdhāb (the liar) tried to step forward and lead the prayer. But then, Imām al-Mahdī (as) appeared and pulled him back, saying:

“I am more deserving of leading the prayer over my father than you.”

Everyone present saw that he was the 12th Imām, but after leading the prayer, he disappeared. From that moment, he was no longer seen by the general public except by trustworthy representatives.

This marked the beginning of the Minor Occultation (al-Ghaybah al-Ṣughrā).

The ʿAbbāsids were terrified. They locked and sealed the Imām’s house and searched for his son, but they could not find him.

May Allah hasten the reappearance of our awaited Imām.

Imām Jawad

The ninth Imām from the Ahl al-Bayt (‘a) of the Prophet(s) is Imām Muhammad b. Ali (‘a). He is well known by two titles: al-Jawād (The Generous One) and at-Taqī (The Pious One).

Imām Muhammad al-Jawād (‘a) was only about 7 or 8 years old when his father was martyred, yet he was the most knowledgeable person of his time. Many doubted that such a young boy could be an Imām, but they were amazed when they asked him difficult questions and received wise answers.

The First Meeting
One day in Baghdad, Caliph Ma’mūn was passing through the streets with his men. All the children ran away from him except Imām al-Jawād (‘a). When Ma’mūn asked why he didn’t run, the Imām replied wisely, “The streets are very wide, and I have no guilt to fear from you.” Ma’mūn was astonished and asked his name. The Imām said, “Muhammad, son of Ali al-Riḍā (‘a).”

Ma’mūn realised the boy was special like his father and decided to marry his daughter to Imām al-Jawād (‘a). Ma’mūn hoped that if they had a child, he could claim succession through the Imām. Also, since Ma’mūn had poisoned Imām al-Riḍā (‘a), marrying his daughter to the Imām’s son was a way to fool people into thinking he respected the family.

The Banu ‘Abbās opposed this idea, so Ma’mūn arranged a debate between the young Imām and the most learned scholar in his court.

The Famous Debate
The hall was full of scholars and people from all classes. Imām al-Jawād (‘a) was only nine years old. When asked about a person who hunted and killed an animal during pilgrimage, the Imām answered with detailed questions about the situation—whether the person was in ihrām, whether the hunting was intentional, whether the person repented, the type and age of the animal, and more.

The scholars were shocked and confused by the depth of his questions. The hall erupted in takbīr as everyone realised the Imāms of Ahlul Bayt (‘a) were truly gifted with Divine knowledge.

Later, Imām al-Jawād (‘a) married Ma’mūn’s daughter, but she had no children, so Ma’mūn’s plan to have grandchildren succeed him failed. The Imām had other wives and many children from them.

Life under Mu’tasim
After Ma’mūn died, the next ruler, Mu’tasim, disliked Imām al-Jawād (‘a) because of his growing popularity and knowledge. Mu’tasim forced the Imām to move back to Baghdad, where he could keep a close watch on him.

Mu’tasim, son of Harūn al-Rashīd by a Turkish mother, brought many Turks to Baghdad, built a new city called Samarrā, and moved the capital there. Before moving, Mu’tasim decided to remove Imām al-Jawād permanently because he feared the Imām’s influence.

Martyrdom
Mu’tasim ordered Imām al-Jawād to be poisoned. Imām Muhammad al-Jawād (‘a) was the youngest martyr among the Imāms, passing away at only 25 years old. He was buried next to his grandfather Imām Mūsā al-Kāẓim (‘a) in Baghdad, in the place known today as Kāẓimiyya.

When someone asked him how, he said, “I am Allah’s proof on Earth. A proof must speak the language of the people.” This shows how perfect and prepared the Imāms were to guide everyone.

👑 The Caliph Ma’mūn’s Plan

After the death of Caliph Hārūn, his two sons, al-Amīn and Ma’mūn, fought over who would rule. The Imām (ʿa) was loved by all, and his knowledge amazed everyone. So, Ma’mūn decided to kill him.

He secretly poisoned the Imām and acted like he was sad when the Imām died.
Imām Mūsā al-Kāẓim (‘a)

The seventh Imām of Islam from the noble Ahl al-Bayt (‘a) is Imām Mūsā al-Kāẓim (‘a), the son of Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (‘a).

His Title – “al-Kāẓim”

The title al-Kāẓim means “one who restrains his anger.” This noble title was given to the Imām (‘a) because of his exceptional patience and self-control in the face of oppression and hardship. He endured great suffering, particularly during his long imprisonment, yet he never expressed frustration or resentment. Instead, he continuously turned to Allah (swt) in gratitude and worship.

The Reign of Hārūn al-Rashīd

During the time of the Abbasid Caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd, Baghdad had grown into a wealthy and powerful capital, often described as “the bride of the world.” However, the caliph indulged heavily in worldly pleasures—such as music, wine, and lavish living—while brutally suppressing the Shīʿa of Ahl al-Bayt (‘a), many of whom were the descendants of Imām ʿAlī (‘a) and Sayyida Fāṭimah (‘a).

Imām Mūsā al-Kāẓim (‘a) actively resisted the regime and warned his followers not to cooperate with or support the government in any form. A notable incident involves his companion Ṣafwān, whom the Imām (‘a) forbade from renting out his camels to Hārūn, as it would indirectly support injustice.

Repeated Imprisonments

Throughout his life, Imām al-Kāẓim (‘a) was frequently arrested and imprisoned by various Abbasid rulers, especially Hārūn al-Rashīd. The caliph became increasingly concerned about the Imām’s rising popularity and influence among the people. To obscure the truth about the Imām’s whereabouts and to prevent public unrest, Hārūn had two separate caravans leave with false claims—one headed toward Kūfa and the other toward Baṣrah.

Despite being transferred between various prisons, Imām al-Kāẓim (‘a) remained steadfast in his devotion to Allah. He spent his days fasting and his nights in prayer. Even under intense surveillance and deprivation, he continued to guide his followers secretly through the transmission of knowledge and religious rulings.

Eventually, Hārūn had the Imām (‘a) imprisoned in a dungeon near Kūfa under the custody of a cruel official named al-Sindī. The Imām (‘a) was given meagre amounts of food and water, yet he bore every hardship with patience and unwavering faith.

Martyrdom

According to well-known reports, Hārūn al-Rashīd had fresh dates laced with deadly poison and ordered that they be given to the Imām (‘a) through al-Sindī. After consuming the poisoned dates, the Imām (‘a) suffered from excruciating pain. Eventually, he passed away in that dark and lonely prison.

To conceal the crime, Hārūn’s regime arranged for false witnesses to testify that the Imām (‘a) had died a natural death. His blessed body was taken to the bridge of Baghdad and abandoned there, in an attempt to humiliate and disgrace him.

Despite these efforts, the sanctity of the Imām (‘a) could not be denied. He was buried in Baghdad in the area now known as Kāẓimiyyah, which today remains a revered site visited by countless followers.
